Just When I Felt Like Flying

Fathomless chasm
teach me to fly
start from your rocky edge to
lift into a dark sky
filled with clouds of doubt
a little remorse
and a fear of falling

I feel you standing
behind me
watching me inch
toward the precipice
then trying to turn away
held in place by
your hands on my back;
never pushing
never guiding
but holding me in place
gently
waiting for me to take flight

Scared, I cried
don’t make me jump
don’t make me walk
into that oily blackness at my feet
but soon the ground was crumbling
and I felt I had
no choice but to try
no choice but to fly
if you’ll hold my hand
please hold my hand...
